Where did Madmans Esprit originate, and why did you choose the name Madmans Esprit?
The band is from Seoul, South Korea. The name Madmans Esprit was chosen by the former guitar player, who is the founding member of the band. He wrote it on his social media because it sounded cool, and I thought it was a good band name.
Is there a connection between Korean and Japanese influences in your artistic project? (For example: The Kopanese version of Mangtashi)
There are definitely influences from both countries. I grew up listening to many Japanese bands, but also, since I’m Korean, there are undeniable influences I’ve got from my environment.
What do you enjoy doing besides music?
I enjoy playing video games and cooking.

Can you describe a moment in your career that felt especially meaningful as a band?
It is hard to pick one, but the latest memory is when we went on the EU tour.
What inspired you to get into music? When did it first feel like a career path for you?
My parents were both music fans, so I naturally grew up listening to many different kinds of music. I think it was around when I was 13 or so when I decided to dedicate my life to making music.
Has Kyuho taken singing lessons, or is he entirely self-taught?
I took vocal lessons, but the harsh vocals are self-taught.
Which music video gave you the most satisfaction or enjoyment during filming?
None of them, it is all extremely exhausting.
What is the biggest challenge when producing a new album or song?
Overcoming my own limit.
Kyuho, who are your favorite philosophers? Do you read psychoanalysis?
I would say Nietzsche or Schopenhauer. I do read psychoanalysis.
How was the term ‘depressive suicidal blackened pop’ coined?
There is already a sub-genre of black metal called ‘Depressive Suicidal Black Metal,’ and I thought it was ironic to call it ‘pop’ since Madmans Esprit’s music is partly metal but can also be very poppy. Also, I believe pop music is the ultimate mass murder weapon.
Why did you change the lyrics in Suicidol (Re) from ‘I will die instead of you’ to ‘I won’t die instead of you’?
Because I won’t.
Is there an artist (not necessarily a musician) you admire or find inspiring?
There are many. Recently, I’ve been very into Hieronymus Bosch.
Is there anything you dislike about your own music?
That it never reaches the level of my satisfaction.
How do you define art? Do you believe there are limits to artistic expression?
Something beautiful, and no.
When and how did your interest in makeup and expressive clothing start?
I think it was a natural development from listening to visual kei artists or other musicians like Marilyn Manson.
We are curious about Kyuho’s creative process: Do you need to be in a specific mindset to write music, or do you follow a routine?
It is pretty much random when it’s about the song/lyric writing. It just pops up in my head. But when I’m recording, mixing, or mastering, it is very routine-based.
Is there anything mundane from your everyday life that inspires you? Where do you draw inspiration for your song lyrics?
Everything.
